How Emery´s numbers compare to Arsenal predecessor Wenger

On April 20, 2018, Arsene Wenger announced that he would step down as Arsenal manager at the end of the season, bringing his 22-year stint at the club to an end.

Unai Emery was selected as Wenger s successor, and the former Sevilla and Paris Saint-Germain coach brought up his 50th game in charge of the Gunners in style on Thursday, as Arsenal claimed a 3-0 aggregate win over Serie A heavyweights Napoli in the Europa League quarter-finals.

The 1-0 victory on the night – which came courtesy of Alexandre Lacazette s superb free-kick – was a 32nd win across all competitions for Emery, and he has the best record of any Arsenal manager in their first 50 matches.

And, using Opta facts, we have taken a look at just how Emery s opening 50 games compare to…

Preston North End 1 Manchester United 3: Rooney on target in fightback

Wayne Rooney was on target as Manchester United came from behind to beat Preston North End 3-1 in the FA Cup.

Wayne Rooney ended his goal drought as Manchester United came from behind to beat Preston North End 3-1 at Deepdale and set up an FA Cup quarter-final against Arsenal.

The England striker had not netted in nine games ahead of Monday s fifth-round tie, but completed the scoring with a late penalty after being moved back into an attacking role by Louis van Gaal.

Scott Laird s second goal of the season just after half-time had put Preston boss Simon Grayson on course to spring another FA Cup shock against United, having masterminded Leeds United s victory at Old Trafford in 2010.

Van Gaal s side avoided an upset, though, as Ander Herrera and Mar…

Brazil to play Costa Rica in New Jersey

Brazil will take on Costa Rica in New Jersey in September in their first international appearance since the Copa America.

Dunga s men will utilise the international break with clashes against the Costa Ricans (September 5) and United States (September 8), as they prepare for World Cup qualifiers against Chile and Venezuela in October.

Brazil and Costa Rica have met just once since 2004, with Neymar scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win in San Jose in 2011.

The Brazilians will be looking to bury their recent demons, as they were unconvincing at the Copa America losing on penalties to Paraguay in the quarter-finals.

Costa Rica, meanwhile, have an uphill task if they are to earn their first win in 11 internationals, despite almost going through the CONCACAF Gol…

Terry: Too long between titles

Chelsea captain John Terry feared his 2010 Premier League title would be his last with the newly crowned champions.

Jose Mourinho s men sealed the 2014-15 title after a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

It marked the club s fifth league title and first since 2010, one Terry felt could be his last.

It s been five years since the last title too long, he said.

When you re seeing other teams win it when you re pushing them right to the end, like we did last year  well, at times I did wonder whether that one in 2010 would be my last one.

It s felt like a long time watching other teams do it. Manchester City came in and dominated for a couple of years, as well, and that s hard to take when you ve won it before and don t for…

Koulibaly would stay at Napoli ´forever´

Kalidou Koulibaly would happily stay at Napoli forever as he feels he owes the club and fans at least one Serie A title.

The centre-back joined Napoli from Belgian club Genk in 2014 and, although he initially had some problems convincing Rafael Benitez, has become a key part of the team under Maurizio Sarri.

Koulibaly has regularly attracted interest from elsewhere over the last two years, with Chelsea coach Antonio Conte said to be an admirer of the Senegal international.

But the 26-year-old is in no rush to jump ship at Napoli, as he is eager to win the Scudetto with them and potentially spend the rest of his career in Naples.

For my family and the fans, and if the contract was good, I wouldn t have a problem signing and staying forever, Koulibaly t…

Conte probably thinks I don´t care about Chelsea, says Mikel

Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel believes Antonio Conte is punishing him for his decision to play at the Olympics with Nigeria.

The 29-year-old has not made an appearance this season, having been frozen out of the first team since his return from Rio de Janeiro, where he claimed a bronze medal.

Nigeria s technical adviser Gernot Rohr claimed that Conte has deliberately kept Mikel out of his plans as a result of his decision to forgo their pre-season plans in favour of playing at the Olympics.

Mikel is adamant he would not trade that experience for a chance to get back into the Chelsea side, but he feels that such a stance has made him something of a pariah to his manager.

I have never been a guy who makes excuses in life and never shy away from respo…

Madrid recruit Jovic: My dream comes true now

In an Instagram post, Jovic wrote: Dear Eintracht fans, as you have already read, I will move to Real Madrid. Of course, I would like to take this opportunity to contact you here again with a few words.

I really enjoyed the last two years at Eintracht Frankfurt. I met a lot of great people and played in a fantastic club, which was also made by the fans to something very special.

We can be proud of our achievements. I will never forget this Europa League season with you! The highlight was of course the DFB Cup win 2017-2018 in Berlin! That s why it s not easy for me to leave Frankfurt.

However, Real Madrid opens a huge door for me to become an even bigger footballer. Every child has this dream of playing at such a club. My dream comes true now.

I wou…

Guardiola thinks ´incredible´ Arteta will be next Man City manager

Pep Guardiola believes the incredible Mikel Arteta will succeed him as Manchester City manager.

Arteta joined Guardiola s backroom staff as an assistant coach in July 2016, just after finishing his playing career with Arsenal.

Under Guardiola, City have enjoyed plenty of success, winning two Premier League titles, two EFL Cup trophies, an FA Cup and two Community Shields.

Guardiola believes his fellow Spaniard, Arteta, could be the man to replace him at the Etihad Stadium.

I m pretty sure [he ll succeed me]. He will have success, he told UK media.

Sooner or later it s going to happen [Arteta becoming a manager]. He s a young, young manager. He has experience already, handling big players and big teams.

He s got an incredible work ethic.…

Griezmann: Messi said he was going to death with me and I feel it every day

Barcelona forward Antoine Griezmann insisted his relationship with Lionel Messi was good, saying he felt the star was ready to go to death with him.

Griezmann has struggled to make his mark at Barcelona since arriving from Atletico Madrid for €120million last year.

The forward s relationship with Messi has been questioned, and Griezmann admitted his decision to reject Barca in 2018 had affected the six-time Ballon d Or winner.

However, Griezmann said there were no doubts over his relationship with Messi now.

I arrived at Barcelona after the rejection the year before, he told Movistar on Monday.

There could have been comments even in the dressing room, from journalists, from the fans and that is why when I arrived I wanted to apologise on the …

Benevento appoint Filippo Inzaghi as new head coach

Serie B side Benevento have confirmed the appointment of Filippo Inzaghi as their new head coach.

Inzaghi was sacked by Bologna in January after just seven months in charge.

The former AC Milan and Venezia boss has now returned to coaching with Benevento on a one-year deal with the option of second season.

Benevento were relegated to the second tier of Italian football at the end of 2017-18 and finished third in their first campaign back in Serie B, before losing 4-2 on aggregate to Cittadella in the play-offs.

Inzaghi replaces Cristian Bucchi, who joined Empoli earlier this week.
